Facts of Court Mounting

Things you need to know:

1) Court Mounting options are swing mount and full mount. Your Court Mounter can explain the difference and the purposes of each mount.

2) When mounting medals you must follow the regulations set our by your Countries 'Honours and Awards or Heritage sites'. All Military Organization have a set Manual that outlines the Standard for all mounting options.

3) RCMP Medals - These are unique and specific to the history and heritage of the RCMP. Your Court Mounter should be able to explain the reason for this and the reason why they have deviated from the CAF Standard. With recent change in CAF directives the CAF and RCMP medals are now the same size.

4) Cadet Medals - These are mounted at the CAF Standard however are in reverse order as they are worn on the right side and are not allowed to be mounted with CAF or RCMP medals. This is important ask your Court Mounter for more information.

5) Canadian Legion Medals - Are mounted to CAF standard. Worn on the right side not the left. Key notes you are only allowed to display a total of 8 medals and 4 bars per medal as set out in the Rituals, Awards and Protocol Manual of the Royal Canadian Legion.

6) Don't be fooled by the fly by night court mounters that watch "you tube" videos. There is a lot more to court mounting then watching a video. A few examples: Push pins lengths, glue or hot glue, tape or adhesive, standard mounting sizes based on the medal origins. ALL medals should be attached by a ....... ASK your Court Mounter. There is a big difference between trained mounters and video mounters.

7) PRICE - Mounting is unique and rare skill set. Ribbon used to mount your medals normally come from England. (If you want the best quality). Local municipal medals like City/County or local Police/Fire/EMS organizations may make there own ribbon and source it locally (Mounter might not be able to get these types of ribbon if they are local supply.

Please note: The court mounting world is not fast, it can take time, however a week or two should be an acceptable wait time for your medals. Expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $30 per medal for full mounting. (subject to your living area and not including shipping if required). Additional last minute request can sometimes be accommodated but could risk and additional charge for the rush order.

8) Miniatures and Replicas - Court mounters should be able to obtain miniature medals and Replica's if you wish to have additional sets of medals to pass down to loved ones. Most Replicas will come with either "R or Replica" stamped on the bottom this a customary standard so please do not be alarmed. Replicas can be expensive based on the type of medal and its origin.

9) Ribbon Bars and Pins - Ribbon bars are usually made as one piece or can be made to slide onto a medal bar. Price is around the same but the advantage of a custom bar is the length of the pins. (Which can be adjusted). Pins on the back of your medals should be between 9mm-13mm depending on the application. Pins pushed through a suit coat, jacket or leather on an angle can cause the Pins to bend and break. It is up to your court mounter to decide if they will fix the pins for you at no cost or a small nominal fee. You should have a good ratio of pins to medals to help compensate for weight.

Lastly - Your Court Mounter is knowledgeable and should be able to explain your medals how they should be mounted and a little history behind them. For people getting medals mounted for a shadow box or other displays your court mounter should work with you to mount them how you would like them. For example all mounted together set distances or mounted all separate for a collage display case etc. Key is don't be scared to ask.

Look Forward to hearing from you soon.
